The Odyssey discovered a Dyson sphere-a massive structure surrounding a star, harnessing its energy. Captain Elena Vasquez stood on the bridge, her eyes on the viewscreen.

"Command, this is Vasquez. I've found a Dyson sphere."

"Copy, Odyssey. Is it inhabited?"

The sensors picked up millions of life signs.

"Yes. They are the First Ones' descendants."

"Take us closer."

The Odyssey approached the sphere, its surface gleaming. A hatch opened, and a figure emerged-tall, silver-skinned, its eyes kind.

"Welcome," it said. "We have been waiting for you."

"Waiting for what?"

"For someone to find us. To take us home."

The descendants of the First Ones boarded the Odyssey, their eyes filled with hope.

The ship returned to the colony, where they were welcomed.

"Command, we're bringing survivors."

"Copy, Odyssey. Good work. Come home."

Elena looked at the Dyson sphere, at the future it represented.

The universe was vast.

And full of wonders.

The end.

The Humvee bounced along the rutted road, dust clouds billowing behind. Sergeant Mike Chen rode shotgun, eyes scanning the buildings, the rooftops, the narrow alleys where danger liked to hide. Behind him, Private Diaz manned the turret, the .50 cal swinging slowly, watching for anything out of place.

"Quiet today," Private Williams said from the driver's seat. His knuckles were white on the steering wheel. "Too quiet."

Mike didn't answer. He'd learned to trust that feeling-the silence before things went wrong.

They passed a marketplace, empty except for a few old men sitting in the shade. No women. No children. No business. Just watching. Waiting.

"Contact front!" Diaz's voice cracked through the intercom.

A figure emerged from an alley, running toward them, something clutched in his hands. Mike saw it-the wire, the vest, the face of a boy who'd been told this was his path to paradise.

"Stop the vehicle! Everyone out! NOW!"

Williams slammed the brakes. Mike was out first, rifle up, shouting in languages he barely knew. The boy kept coming. Fifteen meters. Ten.

Mike fired. One shot. The boy crumpled.

Silence. Then voices, doors slamming, running feet. The marketplace came alive-women pulling children away, men disappearing into shadows.

Mike walked toward the body, Diaz behind him, covering. The boy lay still, the vest unfired, the wire trailing from his lifeless hand.

"He couldn't have been more than sixteen," Diaz whispered.

Mike nodded. Pulled out his radio. "Command, this is Patrol Three. We have a... situation. Need EOD and a medical team."

He looked at the boy's face. Young. Scared. Someone's son.

Williams appeared beside him, face pale. "Sarge, did we... did we have to?"

Mike thought about the marketplace full of civilians. The vest that would have killed dozens.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "We did."

They waited for the bomb techs, standing guard over the body of a boy who never had a chance. Somewhere in the city, the men who'd sent him were already planning the next attack.

Mike looked at the mountains, at the rising sun, at the war that had no end.

"Let's get back to base," he said.

They climbed into the Humvee and drove away, leaving the silence behind.
